Hyperbaric welders primarily engage in underwater welding tasks, a process of joining materials, mainly metals, in a submerged environment.
They work in hyperbaric conditions which involve elevated pressures, either in deep sea or hyperbaric chambers. This requires special equipment and procedures to handle the pressure changes safely.
Tasks often include constructing, maintaining, and repairing underwater structures such as pipelines, ships, offshore platforms, and bridges.
Hyperbaric welders must also be skilled divers. They need to be certified for deep-sea diving and be capable of performing technical dives with specialized equipment.
Extensive understanding of welding processes like stick welding (SMAW), Flux-cored arc welding (FCAW), and gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) which are adapted for underwater use.
Safety is a critical aspect, so hyperbaric welders are trained rigorously in underwater safety protocols, emergency response, and use of diving suits and gear to prevent hazards like decompression sickness
Managing different environmental factors such as temperature, water currents, and visibility, which might affect the welding quality.
They must plan meticulously and solve problems on the fly, as the underwater environment is unpredictable and repairs or constructions are often complex.
